Inmarsat-C with EGC ReceiverFor almost a decade Inmarsat-C has provided maritime and land-based users with a convenient and cost-effective store and forward messaging service.
But back in 1989, the world had yet to discover Internet E-Mail and Inmarsat-C was based around telex messaging conventions.
Since that time, telex has declined somewhat while E-Mail has experienced incredible growth.
So, most LES (Land Earth Stations) have kept pace and are also linked with Internet E-Mail services.

Any Inmarsat-C terminal is capable of sending E-Mail to any Internet address through the most LESs (Land Earth Stations). No special software or registration at LESs is required.

To be able to send messages to Internet you must define the address of the LES Internet Service in the Inmarsat-C address book.
Refer to your Inmarsat-C user guide on how to add a new address to the address book.

In the example which follows the LES "Burum" (Holland) was selected randomly.

The procedure of sending E-Mail via "Burum" is as following:

Compose your message in the normal way adding the Internet address on the very first line.

TO: user@navis.gr (the full Internet address)
SU: [subject] (optional field for subject information)
CC: user2@navis.gr (optional field for full Internet addresses to receive copies of message)
STX: (compulsory start of text indicator)
Message text...

When you have completed the message, send it to "Burum" e-mail gateway using Station 12 Special Access Code 400.

Messages from Inmarsat-C terminals to Internet addresses are charged at 0.17 SDR per 256 bits, irrespective of the destination.
Second addresses (CCs) in this direction are charged at a mere 0.02 SDR per 256 bits.
