THASSOS, GREECE
Thassos, bars and tavernas line the waterfrontsTiny Thassos is almost perfectly round, less than 100 kilometers in diameter and encircled by beautiful sandy beaches. Even the height of summer you'll find uncrowded beaches on Thassos. One thing you will find here which we haven't come across in many other places is a beach strewn with marble ruins - beautiful Aliki has an ancient archaeological site spreading onto the sands!
Nightlife is relatively low key and often centres around the hotels. Much of the accommodation is family owned and you'll find the owners keen to extend the legendary Greek hospitality to their guests. Bars and tavernas line the waterfronts, so have a drink while watching the sun set over the waterfront.
For fabulous views and interesting ruins it's worth making the climb to the temples of Athens and Aphrodite perched high above Thassos Town. Inland Thassos is completely, unspoilt, with wild mountainous scenery dotted with hillside villages little changed by the passage of time. If you're looking for genuine Greek atmosphere in preference to a lively nightlife and crowded beaches, Thassos is the perfect choice.

Swimmers & Sunners Golden beach has a fine stretch of sand and Skala Potamias has a great sandy beach (busy in high season). Skala Rahoni and Skala Prinou are a narrower blend of sand and shingle, great for watersports. To one side of Thassos Town Harbour lies a busy, sandy bay.

Sportspeople You'll find all manner of ways to zip across the surface of the Aegean around Thassos Town and watersports are all round the island.

Out & Abouters Thassos Town is an archaeologist's dream with magical views from the old city walls and the ancient temples of Dionysis and Poseidon. Other ancient treasures include a Roman market place and theatre. The 3,000-year-old village of Panagia is a short trip up from Golden Beach.

Winers & Diners Flower-filled squares, gardens and statuesque buildings make Thassos Town an elegant place to spend the evening with restaurants and tavernas lining the waterfront. Skala Potamias has a fair smattering of good restaurants.

Night Owls Fairly sleepy with the exception of Thassos Town with its bars, clubs and discos, and Skala Potamias which picks up the tempo in high season.
