Crete is the largest and most southerly of the Greek
islands, there's so much to see and do. A coastline that varies between long stretches of soft sand and tiny
coves; warm seas; and a spectacular backdrop of snow-capped mountains divided by green valleys.
You'll find towns and resorts offering everything from historical buildings to bustling shops, tavernas, bars and nightlife.
The three perfect bays of Hersonissos are pretty but can get busy, whilst the
long sweep of Chania Bay is the one if you think you might be tempted by windsurfing or
scuba-diving. Visit the Knossos and the remains of the palace of King
Minos or put on your walking shoes for a stroll down the Samaria Gorge. Chania and Rethymnon
are both historical with lots of Turkish and Venetian influence. Evenings can be as relaxed or as lively as you
choose. Browse around shops or linger over dinner as you watch the boats in the harbour or prepare yourself for
some of the more exuberant bars and nightclubs.
Swimmers
& Sunners Pale sand at Malia; long sandy stretches at
Stalis and Rethymnon; fine bays around the Gulf of Chania. Aghios Nikolaos has one sand and two
shingle beaches nearby, all fairly compact. Hersonissos has a fine sand and shingle beach with small coves.
Undercurrents, especially at Stalis, mean beaches are flag-operated.
Sportspeople Watersports at Hersonissos, Aghios Nikolaos
and Malia - limited in Rethymnon in low season. To the east of the island strong winds
limit watersports during the summer.
Out & Abouters Walkers and mountain bikers have endless
choice to explore the fertile valleys, fed by rivers and brooks from the towering White Mountains. The 300-metre deep
Samaria Gorge stretches 18 kilometres. Knossos, now an archeological site, was the centre of Minoan culture. The
Venetian fortress at Rethymnon is well-preserved, and explore the maze of narrow streets.
Winers & Diners Most resorts have many tavernas and
restaurants. Try barbecued squid with ice-cold white wine and the Cretan pastries with a brandy and coffee.
Night Owls Hersonissos and Malia have many bars and
clubs. Jazz cafes in Chania, discos in Rethymnon and a buzzing harbourfront in Aghios Nikolaos.
