| Everyone knows about the
Hellenic sites that make Athens unique in Europe. Within
the glades of Zappion Park is the ancient Temple of the
Olympian Zeus. The Herodes Atticus theatre is still used
for the dance and music performances of Festival of
Athens. And of course, there's the Majestic Parthenon,
enjoying its superlative view from atop the Acropolis.
But you shouldn't neglect the city's more modern sights,
such as Parliament, where the Evzone Guards march daily,
and Monastiraki Square, a busy shopping area offering
everything from fine woolens to copies of icons. The
city's excellent museums contain Mycenean gold, graceful
sculptures from the Golden Age, Byzantine icons, and
tokens from the Greek struggle for independence. When the Greeks set out for a lively session of dancing and music, they head for the Plaka, a quaint old neighborhood below the Acropolis. 1998-2004 Navis.grŪ Non-Commercial Web Site. |
