Cruise Ship 'Seawing'

RULES AND REGULATIONS

Naturally, there are certain rules and regulations. Some ships are much harder to work on than others in this respect. It is fair to assume that whatever your rank you will be bound by rules concerning appearance, time-keeping and conduct. Some, companies may even operate a penalty system, whereby employees are financially penalised or refused shore leave for misdemeanors.

Certain areas of the ship may be out of bounds, depending on your job and rank, and permission to socialise in passenger areas may be subject to not occupying bar stools or sitting in large groups of staff members. Perhaps the least popular rule to be enforced on some ships is the curfew system, whereby all off-duty employees other than Senior Officers must vacate the passenger areas by a specified time at night.

Any crew member amassing several verbal or written warnings for offenses is liable to be dismissed, as is anyone unfortunate enough to miss the ship without a very good excuse. Drunkenness, swearing and fighting, particularly in passenger areas, will nearly always result in dismissal (especially if your opponent was higher ranking than you!).

If getting fired seems to be something of an occupational hazard, getting rehired, possibly by another cruise line within the same week, may come just as easily. Your claim of 'unfair dismissal' will almost certainly fall on deaf ears, but your new employer may not ask too many questions either.

Suffice to say, most of the regulations appear worse on paper than they do in practice, and in the unlikely event that you do face disciplinary action, take consolation in the knowledge that, unlike your predecessors, you won't be flogged at dawn.
