How did the fjords
come to be here in the first place? It's a question often
asked as your Cruise Ship rounds a spectacular corner and
another incredible vista unfolds in front of you and
above you. But the fact is that there were no fjords in
the first place. We had to wait until around 60 million
years ago, when there was a massive upsurge in the land.
After this came snow - lots and lots of it! As it settled
and compacted it turned to ice, and formed huge glaciers.
In time the glaciers melted, carving out their own slow
escape routes down through the rock, and leaving the
mountains, valleys and fjords as their legacy for us
today.
